Maternal assessors
MBRRACE-UK has over 100 expert assessors from various specialty groups including pathology, midwifery, obstetrics, anaesthetics, intensive care, psychiatry, general practice, emergency medicine and other medical specialities such as cardiologists and neurologists. MBRRACE-UK relies on its assessors to review the care of the women included in the confidential enquiries. Assessors are located in all areas of the UK and Ireland and are only asked to review the care of women who have died outside their region or country to maintain anonymity.
How is care reviewed?
For each confidential enquiry conducted by MBRRACE-UK, every woman's death is reviewed by four core assessor types: Obstetrics, Pathology, Midwifery and Anaesthetics.
When required, women's care is also assessed by other specialities including, but not limited to, obstetric medicine, neurology, cardiology, infectious disease, general practice, emergency medicine.
The MBRRACE annual reports follow a three-year cylclical format. Depending on the year and the topics covered, assessors from certain specialties will receive a higher number of cases to assess, However, in other years, these assessors may only be called upon where an opinion from them has been specifically requested.
In addition to the above, MBRRACE assessors will also undertake reviews, in the same manner, for the annual topic-specific confidential enquiry into maternal morbidity.
What are the expectations of an MBRRACE-UK assessor?
Assessors are expected to undergo a training process and complete a minimum of 12 reviews per year, with the understanding that this may increase during busy periods or within a specific report cycle. Most of the work will be undertaken electronically and travel is not required. All assessors are volunteers and do not receive financial compensation for their work, however, the assessment work should be considered as part of continuing professional development and provide ePortfolio evidence of reflective practice. All assessors are also required to sign confidentiality agreements and disclose any conflicts of interest.
How do I become an MBRRACE-UK assessor?
Assessors are typically appointed through a selection process organised by the relevant Royal Colleges or professional organisations.
Assessors must be in good standing with their relevant Colleges or professional organisations and have recent active clinical practice. Other criteria will be considered during the recruitment process such as experience and interest in national audits, confidential case review or committee work at a national level. Any other specialist experience will also be considered as will evidence of having forged links within and outside of the candidate's own professional group.
Periodically, MBRRACE-UK will advertise for new assessors, which will be posted on this page and, when possible, in College communications. If you would like to be notified about future opportunities, please contact us to be added mailing list.
